Malaria is a mosquito-borne disease caused by a parasite. People with malaria often experience fever, chills, and flu-like illness.

In 2016, an estimated 216 million cases of malaria occurred worldwide. Most malaria cases in 2016 were in the WHO African Region (90,0%), followed by the WHO South-East Asia Region (7,0%) and the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region (2,0%). Plasmodium falciparum is the most prevalent malaria parasite in sub-Saharan Africa, accounting for 99,0 % of estimated malaria cases in 2016. Outside of Africa, P. vivax is the predominant parasite in the WHO Region of the Americas, representing 64,0 % of malaria cases, and is above 30,0 % in the WHO South- East Asia and 40,0 % in the Eastern Mediterranean regions.

In 2016, 10 cases were reported to ECDC as locally acquired: six cases in Greece, two in France, and one each in Spain and Lithuania. These cases are considered sporadic and result from transmission by a local mosquito infected from an imported case (introduced malaria) or by an infected mosquito that was transported by aircraft from a malaria-endemic country (airport malaria). In 2016, 43 cases of malaria were registered among civilians in Ukraine, of which 1 was fatal for tropical malaria (51 cases with 3 deaths in 2015). Of these, 32 cases were brought by citizens of Ukraine, and 11 by foreigners. The greatest number of cases were in Odessa region (11), Kharkiv (5), Donetsk (4), Kirovograd, Chernivtsi region (3) and Kyiv.
